Hanau seeks 800 volunteers for high-stakes mayoral runoff on March 29

Hanau is preparing for a mayoral runoff election on March 29, 2026, with two candidates in the race. The city now needs around 800 volunteers to help ensure the process runs smoothly. Officials have called on residents and non-residents alike to step forward and assist on election day.

The runoff will decide between Dr. Maximilian Bieri of the SPD and Isabelle Hemsley of the CDU. To manage polling stations and ballot processing, the city requires a large team of helpers.

Volunteers can work at general polling stations from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM or assist with absentee and mail-in ballots from 4:30 PM onwards. Those who take part will receive a refreshment allowance—€75 for in-person duties and €40 for counting absentee votes. City employees who volunteer can also claim six to eight hours of compensatory time off, though this does not extend to external helpers. Mayor Claus Kaminsky stressed the need for engaged citizens to support the election. Any adult with German or EU citizenship may apply, regardless of whether they live in Hanau. Interested individuals can register via an online form on the city's official website or by contacting the election office directly by email or phone.

The election office has opened sign-ups for poll workers ahead of the March 29 vote. With 800 helpers needed, the city is relying on public participation to fill all roles. Those who volunteer will play a direct part in ensuring the runoff proceeds without disruption.
