Hanau Celebrates 25 Years of Sisterhood with Tottori Through Stunning Photography
Hanau will host a photography exhibition to mark 25 years of friendship with its Japanese sister city, Tottori. The event, titled 25 Years of Sister Cities: Landmarks and Festivals of Tottori, runs from March 11 to April 24, 2026, at City Hall. Organisers hope it will deepen cultural ties and spark interest in future exchanges between the two communities.
The exhibition is curated by Ekaterina Borissova, who has represented Tottori in Hanau since August 2024 under Japan's JET Program. Her goal is to introduce residents to Tottori's daily life, traditions, and seasonal beauty through a selection of photographs. The images will highlight local landmarks, vibrant festivals, and the city's natural scenery.
A formal opening ceremony will take place on March 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Hildegard Geberth, chair of the Hanau-Tottori Partnership Association, will attend the event. Visitors can then explore the exhibition during regular City Hall hours, Monday to Friday.
Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky stressed the importance of the partnership, calling the exhibition a key moment in the long-standing bond. Since 1999, twelve official delegations from Hanau have travelled to Tottori. Borissova also sees the event as a way to encourage civic involvement, including plans for a sister-school programme.
Beyond showcasing Tottori's culture, the exhibition aims to build excitement for future in-person exchanges. Borissova hopes it will give Hanau's residents a first glimpse of their sister city, fostering curiosity and connection.
The exhibition will remain open for six weeks, offering a visual journey through Tottori's traditions and landscapes. It coincides with the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship, reinforcing cultural and educational links. Organisers anticipate stronger engagement between the two communities in the years ahead.
