Survivor of the racist attack in Hanau dies from late effects - Hanau attack survivor Ibrahim Akkus dies six years after racist shooting
Six years after the racist attack in Hanau, another victim has died from the long-term effects of his injuries. Ibrahim Akkus, who was critically wounded in the 2020 shooting, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 70. His death marks another tragic consequence of the violence that shocked the city.
On February 19, 2020, Tobias R. opened fire in a Hanau bar, seriously injuring Akkus. Already living with a prosthetic leg due to diabetes, Akkus was left wheelchair-bound after the attack. He endured months in hospital, undergoing multiple surgeries, but the physical and psychological damage persisted.
Akkus struggled with the trauma until his death. The attack not only worsened his existing health issues but also left deep emotional scars. Despite medical care, his condition never fully recovered. Hanau’s mayor, Claus Kaminsky (SPD), spoke about the impact of Akkus’s death. He described the victim’s fate as both a warning and a mandate for the city. Kaminsky reaffirmed Hanau’s commitment to standing with the victims’ families and combating racism and inhuman ideologies.
Akkus’s death brings the total number of fatalities linked to the 2020 attack to another tragic milestone. His long-term suffering highlights the lasting damage caused by the violence. The city continues to address the consequences while reinforcing its stance against hatred and extremism.
