Hamburg's Museums Present New Highlights and Big Names in 2026 - Hamburg's Museums Present New Highlights and Big Names in 2026
Hamburg’s museums are preparing a busy year for 2026, with major exhibitions across the city. New shows will cover everything from design and sculpture to historical photography and artistic retrospectives. Visitors can expect works by internationally recognised names alongside fresh explorations of cultural themes.
The Museum of Arts and Crafts Hamburg (MK&G) will focus on design in all its forms throughout 2026. Two key retrospectives will honour renowned designers: Hans Hansen (opening April 17) and Hella Jongerius (in autumn). Later in the year, the Museum am Rothenbaum – Cultures and Arts of the World (MARKK) will present an exhibition on the stories behind Jewish objects in its collection, running from August 28 to mid-2027. Before that, from June 5 to the end of 2026, MARKK will display historical photographs and audio recordings by Hans Heinrich Brüning.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle will host a dual exhibition featuring Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch from March 27 to August 30. Later in the year, the Kunsthalle will also open 'Sculptural: The New Galleries' (April 24, 2026–April 11, 2027), showcasing over 500 sculptures. Meanwhile, the Bucerius Kunst Forum will explore artistic depictions of children from the 16th to the 21st century, running through early April.
Elsewhere, the Deichtorhallen will present a major retrospective of Lebanese artist Huguette Caland until April 26. In autumn 2026, the Kunsthalle will also feature a retrospective of New York-based artist David Novros.
The exhibitions will bring a mix of historical depth and contemporary creativity to Hamburg’s cultural scene. From large-scale retrospectives to themed shows, the city’s museums are set to attract art lovers and curious visitors alike. Many of the displays will remain open well into 2027, offering extended opportunities to engage with the works.
