Hamburg Welcomes 1.4 Million Cruise Guests in a Year - Hamburg's cruise industry sails into recovery with record visits and spending

Hamburg's cruise industry is bouncing back after years of disruption. The city saw a rise in ship visits and passenger numbers last year, with more travellers extending their stays. Many also spend money on dining, shopping, and cultural activities while in port.

In 2022, Hamburg welcomed 295 cruise ship calls—29 more than the previous year. A total of 46 different vessels docked, including three making their first visit. River cruise ships added another 43 stops.

Passenger figures also climbed, reaching around 1.4 million in 2022. This marked an increase of 100,000 compared to 2021. More travellers are now choosing to stay longer, with 38% spending at least one night in the city before or after their cruise—double the rate recorded in 2016. On average, each cruise passenger spends €133.59 in Hamburg. Over 70% take time to explore the city's restaurants, shops, or cultural sites. The 2023 season looks even busier, with 331 ship calls expected, plus 47 river cruise visits and eight maiden voyages.

The growth in ship calls and overnight stays suggests stronger demand for Hamburg as a cruise hub. With higher spending and more visitors exploring the city, the sector appears to be recovering. Officials will watch whether this trend continues in the coming years.
