Hagen’s Christmas tree season kicks off with Nordmann firs in high demand
The Christmas tree season has officially begun in Hagen, with Minister of Economic Affairs Silke Gorißen and Germany’s Christmas Tree Queen Sarah Neßhöver marking the start by felling the first tree at Gut Kuhweide estate. This year, the Nordmann fir remains the top choice, appreciated by Minister Gorißen herself. However, consumers can expect higher prices due to thriving crops and increased demand.
The Nordmann fir, known for its hardiness and resilience to climate change, continues to be the most popular Christmas tree. It accounts for a significant portion of the one in three German Christmas trees sourced from North Rhine-Westphalia, a major economic driver for the region. At Gut Kuhweide estate, a meter of a Nordmann fir costs €26.
The thriving Christmas tree crops this year, coupled with increased demand, have led to an anticipated rise in prices. Despite this, the Nordmann fir's popularity shows no signs of waning, with Minister Gorißen herself expressing her fondness for the variety. The Sauerland region alone contributes substantially to this trend, producing and selling seven million Christmas trees annually.
The Christmas tree season is off to a strong start, with the Nordmann fir maintaining its popularity despite expected price increases. Minister Gorißen and Sarah Neßhöver's symbolic act at Gut Kuhweide signals a prosperous season ahead for the region's Christmas tree industry.
