GÜS Marks 30 Years of Combating Drug Crime in Germany

The Joint Basic Substance Monitoring Office (GÜS) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, marking three decades of combating drug crime in Germany. Established on April 4, 1995, under the Basic Substance Monitoring Act (GÜG), the GÜS has proven vital in coordinating efforts between police and customs authorities.

The GÜS's role is crucial due to the nature of basic substances - legally produced chemicals that can be misused for producing synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs. In 2023 alone, German authorities seized a substantial amount of these illicit substances: nearly 2,000 kg of amphetamine, over 1.1 million ecstasy tablets, and more than 450 kg of methamphetamine. This highlights the importance of the GÜS's work in monitoring these chemicals and preventing their misuse.

One of the GÜS's most significant achievements was the 2024 laboratory seizure, a result of close cooperation between customs and police. This operation led to the dismantling of a large-scale MDMA production facility, with a capacity of several tons. This success underscores the added value the GÜS brings to investigators, serving as a coordination point and contact point for domestic and foreign authorities.

The GÜS's three decades of service have been marked by numerous successes, including a significant increase in cocaine seizures from 2022 to 2023. As designer basic substances, with no known legal use, often enter Germany under false declarations, the GÜS's continued vigilance and cooperation with other authorities remain essential in combating drug crime.
