Greece Secures €1.35B Highway Deal After Eight Years of Talks
Greece is finalising the financial transfer of the Egnatia Odos highway concession after eight years of negotiations. The deal, set to close on 28 December, will bring in 1.35 billion euros to help repay national debt early. A consortium led by GEK Terna and Egis Projects secured the contract back in 2017.
The process began in November 2017 when a consortium of GEK Terna and Egis Projects won the tender. Their bid led to the creation of Aegean Motorway S.A., the company now taking over operations. The concession covers the 670-kilometre Egnatia Odos highway in northern Greece for the next 35 years.
Once finalised, the funds will go directly toward reducing Greece’s national debt ahead of schedule. Aegean Motorway S.A. will manage the highway for the next 35 years, starting this December. The deal marks the end of a lengthy financial process that began with the original tender six years ago.
