Greece Fast-Tracks Emergency Water Projects Amid Severe Shortages

The Greek government is reviewing emergency status requests for critical water projects. EYDAP, Athens’ public water utility, and the Municipality of Meganisi have both submitted applications. If approved, the measure would speed up upgrades to struggling water networks.

EYDAP applied for emergency status due to growing water shortages in the greater Athens area. The designation would allow faster tendering and licensing for essential network improvements.

Emergency status would cut red tape for urgent waterworks in Athens and Meganisi. The government has already used this approach for other regions facing shortages. A decision on the latest applications is expected soon.
