Google Maps glitch triggers massive traffic jams in Wiesbaden

A major error in Google Maps caused traffic chaos in Wiesbaden on Tuesday. The app incorrectly showed a stretch of the A3 motorway as closed for hours. This led to widespread congestion as drivers sought alternative routes through the city.

The problem began when Google Maps displayed a false closure on the A3 between Niedernhausen interchange and Wiesbadener Kreuz junction. Many motorists, relying on the app for navigation, diverted into Wiesbaden to avoid the supposed blockage. The sudden influx of vehicles overwhelmed local roads, especially during peak travel times.

The incorrect information stayed visible in the app for over 12 hours on March 10. Despite the obvious disruption, Google took more than half a day to fix the mistake. City officials later criticised the company for its slow reaction, arguing that a widely used service must correct such errors far more quickly. No public records exist on how long Google typically takes to resolve similar mapping errors in other areas.

The delay in correcting the false closure led to hours of gridlock in Wiesbaden. Local authorities have since called for faster responses from tech companies when navigation tools misdirect traffic. The incident highlights the impact of digital mapping errors on real-world travel.
