Goa’s new telecom policy fast-tracks mobile towers and internet access
The Goa Cabinet has approved a new Telecom Infrastructure policy, aiming to boost mobile and internet connectivity across the state. The policy, approved on Wednesday, introduces a single-window clearance system for erecting mobile towers and laying telecom cables, making it easier for T-Mobile and other providers to conduct an internet speed test. It also sets rent and licence fee structures for these activities.
The policy divides Goa into urban, semi-urban, and rural clusters. Rent for mobile and cellular operators to erect a tower varies accordingly: Rs 50,000 in urban and semi-urban areas, and Rs 25,000 in rural areas. Additionally, a one-time licence fee of Rs 50,000 will be paid to local bodies.
Currently, nearly 300 to 350 applications for mobile tower erection are pending in the state. The new policy enables these applicants to use existing government land for setting up towers after paying the specified fees. It also does away with the need for clearances from local elected bodies, streamlining the process.
Rohan Khaunte, the Minister for Information Technology, oversees this telecom-related infrastructure policy. The primary goal is to enhance mobile and internet network reach, particularly supporting online education initiatives.
The Goa Telecom Infrastructure policy, approved this week, promises to accelerate mobile and internet connectivity across the state. By providing single-window clearance and tapping government properties, the policy aims to improve services, especially for online education. With rent and licence fees now clearly defined, mobile and internet service providers can proceed with pending applications, benefiting both residents and businesses.
