Girocard stays Germany’s undisputed leader in cashless payments for 2024

The girocard remains Germany’s top choice for cashless payments in 2024. With 100 million cards in circulation, it continues to dominate daily transactions. A recent report highlights its growing use, especially for smaller purchases and contactless payments.

The girocard first launched as the ec-card, designed for ATM withdrawals using a magnetic stripe. Over time, it expanded into a full payment system, now covering both transactions and Germany’s ATM network. The brand is managed by girocard GmbH, which oversees everything from security standards to marketing and licensing partnerships with Mastercard.

The girocard’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Its widespread adoption, rising contactless use, and expanding merchant network reinforce its role in Germany’s payment landscape. The system’s growth in 2023 reflects its continued importance for both consumers and businesses.
