Giessen's Wastewater Plant Modernization Boosts Energy Efficiency
The wastewater treatment plant in Giessen is undergoing a significant modernization project to enhance energy efficiency. The work, expected to be completed by 2027, has already resulted in substantial savings.
The plant's eight aeration tanks, each holding 4 million liters, are being modernized one at a time. The current tank's work is on track to finish by October 2025, with the last two slated for 2026 and 2027. The modernization involves renewing the aeration systems to adapt to the high-efficiency compressed air supply of the new combined heat and power (CHP) plant and compressor station installed in 2023.
Each tank will receive over 800 new aerator membranes. Since 2023, these upgrades have led to an impressive annual electricity savings of 1,885,000 kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the yearly usage of 1,450 inhabitants. This has increased the plant's share of self-generated energy from around 70 to 94 percent. The energy-optimized aeration also boosts operational safety and better responds to varying loads in the wastewater.
The modernization of Giessen's wastewater treatment plant is expected to reduce energy consumption and operating costs significantly. With the work scheduled for completion by 2027, the plant aims to maintain its increased energy efficiency and self-sufficiency.
