Gießen's free lecture series kicks off with district heating insights for homeowners
Gießen Municipal Utilities (Stadtwerke Gießen) is launching the first session of Energy Knowledge Tuesdays for 2026 on March 31. The free online lecture will focus on district heating, its role in the city's heat transition, and practical details for property owners. This comes as construction begins on expanding Gießen's district heating network in key areas of the Niederfeld district.
The lecture, scheduled for 5:30 PM on March 31, will cover how district heating fits into Gießen's updated heat planning. Topics include house connections, costs, and available funding options. The session is specifically aimed at homeowners and property owners considering heating system upgrades.
District heating often meets Germany's legal requirements for new heating installations. This makes it a practical choice for many residents as the city pushes forward with its heat transition. The event is part of a wider series, with eight lectures planned across six energy efficiency topics. All sessions are free and hosted by SWG's energy advisory team. The timing coincides with major construction work starting on March 26 in Niederfeldstraße, Grabenstraße, and Kornblumenstraße. These streets will see full closures until August 2026 as SWG expands the district heating network. The work follows a revised communal heat plan approved in July 2025, prioritising these areas for new connections.
The lecture series continues SWG's efforts to inform residents about energy-efficient heating solutions. With construction underway and legal standards driving demand, district heating is becoming a central part of Gießen's infrastructure. Further sessions will explore additional topics in energy efficiency throughout 2026.
