Gießen's district heating expansion to disrupt three streets in 2026

Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will expand its district heating network to three streets in the city. The project aims to provide more households with climate-friendly heating. Construction is set to begin next year, with some disruptions expected for residents. Work will start on 26 March 2026 and continue until mid-August 2026. The affected areas include Niederfeldstraße (houses 1 to 11), Grabenstraße (houses 16 to 26), and Kornblumenstraße (between houses 51A and 57). Each section will face full road closures while construction is underway.

Residents will still be able to access their properties, though brief delays may occur at times. Parking will be suspended in the construction zones, and some sidewalk restrictions will limit pedestrian movement. The project will also involve upgrading natural gas and drinking water pipes in the same areas.

Ulli Boos, the spokesperson for SWG, is leading the project. The company has stated that efforts will be made to keep disruptions to a minimum. The expansion will allow more households to switch to climate-friendly district heating. While the exact number of connected properties remains unclear, the upgrades will also improve local infrastructure. Construction is scheduled to finish by August 2026.
