Gießen's 2026 local elections see surge in postal voting requests

Gießen's upcoming local elections on 15 March 2026 will see a significant number of voters casting their ballots by post. Nearly a quarter of eligible residents have already requested postal voting docs. The city's electoral office has outlined clear steps for those choosing this option.

Voters who receive their polling card can decide between mailing it back or voting in person at a designated station. If opting for postal voting, completed orange ballots must be dropped into the town hall's mailbox by 6:00 PM on election day—polling stations will not accept them. Standard postage typically adds two to three days to delivery, meaning the entire process should take no longer than a week.

Applications for postal ballots are processed quickly, usually on the same day or the next working day. Once approved, the docs are handed to the postal service the following day. The electoral register then marks the polling card with a blocking note to prevent duplicate voting. After this, voters can only use that specific card to participate.

The electoral office advises contacting them immediately if postal docs do not arrive within a week. Assistance is available by phone at +49 641 306-2011 or via email at [email protected]. For any issues with the process, voters are encouraged to reach out directly.

The city has streamlined the postal voting system to ensure efficiency and security. Voters must bring valid ID if choosing to cast their ballot in person. Those with concerns or delays are urged to contact the Gießen electoral office without hesitation.
