Two Gun-Free Zones in Giessen from November - Gießen Introduces Weapon-Free Zones from November 1, 2023

Gießen is set to introduce weapon-free zones from November 1, 2023. The city aims to enhance public safety by restricting weapons and dangerous objects in specific areas during certain hours.

The restriction will initially apply to part of Ludwigstraße, from Thursday to Saturday each week, from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the next morning. This follows a comprehensive analysis of crime data from 2018 to 2024, which revealed that one-fifth of all weapon-related offenses occurred in these zones.

Violations of the new rules could incur fines of up to €10,000, though fines are expected to remain in the double-digit range in practice. The city hopes this preventive measure will protect people from crimes involving weapons.

Gießen joins several other Hessian cities in implementing weapon-free zones. While Hanau has already introduced a permanent weapon ban zone, Gießen's new restrictions are set to begin on November 1, 2023, targeting specific areas and times based on crime data analysis.
