Giessen Braces for Massive Protests Against Gaza War

Giessen braces for large crowds as activists plan a major demonstration against the Gaza war. The police and local authorities are preparing for the event, expected to draw tens of thousands of people and cause significant traffic disruptions.

The police president and Giessen’s Lord Mayor have met with fairground operators and local business representatives to discuss the forthcoming operation. A dedicated task force has been established within the Central Hesse Police Headquarters to plan and prepare for the deployment.

Five gatherings have been notified to the city’s assembly authority, with organizers expecting over 10,000 participants in total. The Borkener Zeitung reports that a large demonstration at the end of November is planned, with initially 30,000 registered participants, and the expectation is that even more people will attend.

Torsten Krückemeier, President of the Central Hesse Police Headquarters, has emphasized the police’s neutral role in maintaining public safety and order. He accepted an invitation to update representatives of the city council’s parliamentary groups on the upcoming deployment. The police do not yet have verified figures for actual attendance and no concrete calls to violence have been reported.

With extremely high foot traffic anticipated, ensuring uninterrupted emergency medical care and access to hospitals and nursing facilities remains a priority. Police in Giessen have received numerous inquiries about potential restrictions within the city ahead of the final weekend in November. Media inquiries can be directed to the Central Hesse Police Headquarters’ Public Relations & Press Office.
