Ghost Brokers Exploit Rising Costs to Sell Fake Car Insurance Policies

Fraud Awareness Week has highlighted a surge in ghost brokers—phony insurance agents duping consumers into purchasing bogus car insurance policies. These scammers often target individuals grappling with escalating costs, leaving them uninsured when they need coverage most.

Ghost brokers have seen increased activity in recent years, with Action Fraud logging over 850 reports since 2014. Victims have collectively lost £631,000, often discovering the fraud only when they attempt to file a claim or provide proof of insurance.

The rise in ghost broking illustrates how fraudsters capitalize on financial strain and technological advancements to deceive consumers. As cases rise, authorities and insurers are advocating for stricter measures to safeguard vulnerable groups from falling prey to fake car insurance policies.
