Timing Change - New ICE Connections and Construction Work - Germany’s Rail Overhaul: Major ICE Disruptions Coming in 2026

The first phase of disruption begins on May 1, 2026, when the line between Maschen (near Hamburg) and Hanover-Burg closes for ten weeks. This will delay services until July 10, 2026, as crews carry out essential upgrades. Regular service between Berlin and Hamburg will only resume fully on May 1, 2026, after a major overhaul of the route.

The upgrades aim to improve travel times and reliability across Northern Germany. Temporary closures and new routes will remain in place until the work is completed. Passengers are advised to check Deutsche Bahn’s updates for the latest service changes before travelling.
