Germany’s flower industry wilts as businesses and farmland shrink by 2025

Germany’s horticultural sector has seen a steady decline in recent years. New figures from 2025 reveal fewer businesses growing flowers and ornamental plants, alongside a reduction in cultivated land. The trend highlights ongoing changes in the industry’s scale and structure.

In 2025, the country had 2,821 horticultural businesses specialising in flowers and ornamental plants. This marked a 9.7 percent drop since 2021, with 302 fewer operations closing down. The decline has been even sharper over a longer period—since 2017, the sector lost 847 businesses, a reduction of 23.1 percent.

The latest statistics show a smaller horticultural industry in Germany. With fewer businesses and less land under cultivation, the sector continues to adjust. The figures reflect broader shifts in agricultural and economic conditions affecting ornamental plant production.
