Germany's electric vehicle boom accelerates with record sales in 2025
Electric vehicle sales in Germany surged in 2025, with battery-powered cars making up nearly a fifth of all new registrations. The market also saw falling prices and better technology, as more drivers switched to electric options. SUVs remained the most popular choice among buyers. In 2025, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 19.1% of Germany's new car market, with 545,142 units registered—a 43.2% increase from 2024. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 2.3%, while regular hybrids grew to 6.5%. SUVs dominated the electric market, representing 55% of available models.
The number of BEV models expanded from 134 in 2024 to 155 by early 2026. Prices also shifted: after peaking at €56,669 in 2024, the average cost dropped to €52,934 in 2026. The steepest discounts appeared in the 'small SUV,' 'midsize,' and 'upper midsize' segments. Despite this, only 18 electric models remained priced under €30,000. Technological improvements played a key role in the market's growth. Between 2022 and 2026, the average range of electric cars rose from 376 km to 480 km under WLTP standards. Charging power also increased, climbing from 116 kW (158 hp) in 2022 to 171 kW (233 hp) in 2026.
Germany's electric vehicle market has grown rapidly, with more models, longer ranges, and lower prices. SUVs continue to lead sales, while advancements in charging and battery performance make electric cars more practical. The trend suggests further expansion as technology improves and costs decrease.
