Explosions of ATMs on the rise again in Saxony - Germany’s ATM bombings decline but still cost millions in 2024

ATM bombings in Germany have caused up to €40 million in damage this year, with criminals stealing around €13 million. While attacks remain a problem, prevention efforts have led to a noticeable drop in incidents. Saxony, in particular, has seen fewer explosions compared to previous years—though seven cases were still recorded by December 2024.

Nationwide, 456 attacks on ATMs took place in 2024, with 269 involving explosions. Despite the high numbers, the trend shows improvement: Saxony reported only four atomic bombings this year, down from 17 in 2018. However, seven incidents had already occurred in the region by early December.

The combined efforts of police and banks have reduced ATM bombings, though the financial impact remains significant. With €40 million in damages and €13 million stolen, the problem persists—but stricter prevention has already shown results. Saxony’s drop from 17 to four incidents since 2018 highlights the progress made so far.
