Asparagus from mid-March - this is the price per kilogram - Germany's asparagus harvest kicks off early thanks to warm spring weather

Germany's asparagus season is off to an unusually early start this year. Warm spring weather has pushed the first harvests forward, with farmers in southwestern regions already preparing to gather their crops. Experts predict excellent quality and stable prices as the season ramps up ahead of Easter.

The sudden jump from winter chill to summer-like temperatures has given this year's asparagus season a 'turbocharged' beginning. In southwestern Germany, harvesting could kick off as early as mid-March, weeks ahead of the usual schedule. By March 20, significant quantities are expected to hit markets, with northern and western regions soon joining in.

According to the Association of South German Asparagus and Strawberry Growers, supplies will be plentiful by Easter. The weather has also boosted quality, with spears expected to be particularly fine this season. Prices will stay steady, starting at moderate levels before settling into familiar ranges.

Lower-grade or soup asparagus will remain under €10 per kilogram, while premium 'Sunday asparagus' will cost between €10 and €20 per kilogram. The country's 1,350 farms, spread across 19,200 hectares, produced nearly 105,000 tons in 2025. Key growing areas include Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg (notably Schwetzingen and Bruchsal), and Bavaria (around Passau and Schrobenhausen).

The early harvest and favorable conditions mean asparagus lovers can expect fresh, high-quality spears well before the usual peak. With stable pricing and abundant supplies by Easter, the season looks promising for both growers and consumers. The unusual weather has set the stage for one of the most productive starts in recent years.
