German Woman Sentenced for IS Support, Given Probation
A German woman, Duygu D., has been sentenced to two years in prison, suspended on probation, following a nine-day trial. The 35-year-old was convicted for supporting a foreign terrorist organization, IS, and spent time in Syria under their control.
Duygu D., born to Turkish immigrants in Germany, adopted an Islamist-Salafist and jihadist worldview by late 2014. She married S. G., a childhood friend who had joined IS, and in March 2015, she traveled to Syria to join him. The couple lived in IS-controlled territory until 2019, raising their two children there.
Upon returning to Germany in 2014, Duygu D. became involved with a group of young men drawn to Salafist Islam. Her husband, S. G., had already traveled to Syria and joined ISIS, completing their training and marrying Duygu in April 2015. After being repatriated to Germany in March 2022, Duygu D. has lived with her children in a rented apartment since August 2022.
The court considered Duygu D.'s full confession, lack of prior convictions, and positive development since returning to Germany in its sentencing decision. Both the defendant and her defense counsel, along with prosecutors, waived their right to appeal following the verdict.
Duygu D. was convicted for supporting a foreign terrorist organization and sentenced to two years in prison, suspended on probation. Her sentence reflects her cooperation with authorities and positive development since returning to Germany.
