Sensitive citizen data leaked after cyberattack - German Town’s Sensitive Data Stolen in Devastating Cyberattack

The small town of Untereisesheim, near Heilbronn, fell victim to a cyberattack in October. Hackers stole sensitive personal data from residents, including copies of ID documents and COVID-19 records. The breach has since triggered an official investigation by Baden-Württemberg’s data protection authority.

The attack came to light after stolen information appeared on the darknet, as reported by regional broadcaster SWR. Among the compromised files were identification documents and health-related records of local residents.

Mayor Christian Tretow stated that no security lapses occurred before the incident. Despite this, the town has since strengthened its defences. IT systems were completely overhauled, and employees underwent rigorous data protection training.

The Landesdatenschutzbeauftragter, Baden-Württemberg’s state data protection commissioner, is now examining the case. Their office remains in close contact with the municipality as the investigation continues.

The stolen data has already surfaced on hidden parts of the internet. While the town insists its security protocols were adequate, the attack has forced major changes to its digital infrastructure. Authorities are still assessing the full impact on affected residents.
