German Rail Slims Down Board and Significantly Reduces Number of Executives - German Rail slashes bureaucracy to put passengers first in 2026 overhaul

German Rail is overhauling its leadership structure to cut bureaucracy and sharpen its focus on passengers. The changes will take effect from January 1, 2026, with fewer executives and a clearer chain of command. Travelers can expect better services, including cleaner trains and improved communication, as part of the shake-up.

The restructuring will remove an entire layer of intermediate management between executives and senior leaders. The first tier of management will shrink from 43 units to just 22, significantly reducing the number of executive roles. The executive board itself will also be downsized to six divisions, replacing the current, larger setup.

Under the new system, the Technology/Digitization and Infrastructure portfolios will no longer exist as standalone departments. Instead, Deutsche Bahn InfraGO AG will streamline operations, with key positions now held by Imke Kellner (Head of Fahrweg), Katja Hüske (Head of Personenbahnhöfe), and Gerd-Dietrich Bolte (Head of Infrastrukturplanung und -projekte). Philipp Nagl remains CEO, while Jens Bergmann continues as CFO.

Passengers will see direct benefits from early 2026. An 'immediate action program' will roll out, prioritising comfort, security, and cleanliness. Mobile cleaning teams will boost sanitation before and during journeys. Reliable onboard catering and properly maintained restrooms will also be enforced.

The changes aim to make German Rail more efficient and responsive to customer needs. With fewer managers and a stronger focus on service quality, the company expects smoother operations and a better travel experience. The first improvements will be visible when the new structure takes effect in January 2026.
