German Lawmaker Explores EUDI Wallet’s Potential to Revolutionize Pharmacies

Dr. Markus Reichel, a member of the German Bundestag representing the CDU, recently visited the Knut Pharmacy in Dresden. The purpose of his visit was to discuss digitalization issues, particularly the potential of the EUDI Wallet for pharmacies like Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. Reichel praised the advancements already in place, such as digitally controlled inventory processes and secure integration with the telematics infrastructure. He suggested that Dresden could be an ideal location for large-scale pilot testing of the EUDI Wallet, which enables digital powers of attorney and delegations with a high level of security. The EUDI Wallet was discussed as a potential 'game-changer' for pharmacies. It could streamline dispensing and delivery logistics by allowing patients to grant specific consents. Reichel pledged to work toward establishing a legally secure framework for the EUDI Wallet. During the visit, Reichel also emphasized the importance of recognizing the full range of services pharmacies offer beyond medication dispensaries. Michael GĂ€be, the pharmacist, highlighted two key challenges with the current telematics infrastructure systems: lack of functionality beyond secure communication and the need for a patient-centered exchange system. Reichel's visit to the Knut Pharmacy in Dresden underscored the potential of digitalization, particularly the EUDI Wallet, in transforming pharmacy services. With a legally secure framework, the EUDI Wallet could enable paperless, secure digital powers of attorney, easing staff workload and improving overall efficiency. The visit also highlighted the need for improvements in the telematics infrastructure to better support the full range of pharmacy services.
