German drivers warned over EU licence renewal confusion
German drivers holding the EU card-style licence must check the front of their document for the replacement deadline. The date printed in Field 4a determines when the licence must be renewed. Many mistakenly look at the back, where different rules apply.
The EU card-style driving licence uses numbered fields to organise information. Fields 1–3 cover personal details, while Field 4a shows the issue date and Field 4b the expiry date. Field 4c names the issuing authority, and Field 5 displays the licence number.
The replacement deadline is set by the issue date on the front of the licence. Dates on the back relate only to specific driving permissions and should not be confused with the renewal requirement. Drivers must ensure they renew their licence by the date shown in Field 4b to stay compliant with regulations.
