Clearance of protest camp costs more than 220,000 euros - German authorities clear 16-month forest protest at €220,000 cost
An illegal protest camp at Langen Forest Lake was cleared in November 2025 after a long standoff. Activists had occupied the site since summer 2024 to block tree felling for gravel extraction. The operation cost authorities over €220,000 and involved hundreds of officers each day.
The occupation began in summer 2024 when protesters set up camp to halt forest clearance for construction materials. For over a year, they resisted attempts to remove them, leading to 52 recorded criminal and administrative offences by November 19, 2025.
On November 12, 2025, police launched a large-scale eviction, deploying several hundred officers daily. The operation's expenses quickly exceeded €220,000, with partial costs still rising.
Since the clearance, no further protests or blockades against similar forest operations have been reported in Germany. The last recorded action before this case took place in 2023 in the Frankenwald region of Bavaria.
The eviction marked the end of a 16-month protest at Langen Forest Lake. Authorities spent over €220,000 to clear the site, with no new demonstrations of this kind reported since. The operation followed months of tensions and multiple recorded offences linked to the occupation.
