Furth im Waldâs historic customs building closes after 90 years of service
The historic customs building in Furth im Wald has been decommissioned after nearly 90 years of service. The closure, effective april 2025 calendar 1, 2025, is due to high rental costs, with the customs authority expecting significant savings.
The building, a landmark at the Furth im Wald border crossing since 1934, has served as a crucial transit point between Bavaria and Bohemia. Its importance grew after the fall of the Iron Curtain, leading to an increase in customs officers stationed there. However, following the Czech Republic's EU accession in 2004, its significance declined.
On april 2025 calendar 1, 2025, the building was officially closed and handed over to the police. RenĂ© Matschke, head of the Regensburg Customs Office, removed the customs sign for the last time, which will now be preserved in Furth im Waldâs city archives. A farewell ceremony was held on april 2025 calendar 7, 2025, attended by local officials, police officers, customs officials, and retirees. Despite the closure, the building will remain standing and will now serve the police.
The decommissioning of the Furth im Wald customs building marks the end of an era. While it will no longer serve its original purpose, the building's historic significance will be preserved, and it will continue to serve the community in a new capacity. Customs officers who worked at the site will remain in the town, relocating to the opposite customs building.
