Fulda Honors Twelve Citizens for Extraordinary Acts of Bravery in 2026
Twelve citizens were honoured for their bravery at the third annual civic courage awards in Fulda. The ceremony, held on January 23, 2026, recognised individuals who stepped in during emergencies across Osthessen. Police President Michael Tegethoff presented the awards at the regional police headquarters.
The event highlighted acts of quick thinking and courage in life-threatening situations. Among those commended was Matthias Heil, who saved a woman's life after a severe traffic accident near Neuhof. Bettina Schulz also received recognition for her crucial testimony following a homicide in Fulda.
Marcel Schneider and Felix Appel were honoured for their actions during a barn fire in Wartenberg-Angersbach. Their intervention helped prevent further damage and potential injuries. Meanwhile, Manuel Deigert and Hartmut John were praised for averting a tragedy in Schweben, though details of their actions were not disclosed. The ceremony also revisited a past incident from 2023, when six women were recognised for saving a man's life after a knife attack in Bad Hersfeld. Tegethoff emphasised that the awards celebrate ordinary citizens who act decisively in critical moments. He established the annual event to formally acknowledge such bravery within the community.
The awards ceremony has now become a fixed tradition under Tegethoff's leadership. Each year, it shines a light on those who put themselves at risk to protect others. The honoured citizens join a growing list of individuals whose actions have made a tangible difference in Osthessen.
