Fulda District rolls out €98M fiber-optic network for 40,000 users by Christmas
Fulda District has launched a major fiber-optic expansion project just before Christmas. The scheme will connect over 35,000 households and around 5,000 businesses to high-speed internet. Funding for the initiative comes from the state, federal government, and local authorities, totalling around €98 million.
The project focuses on delivering fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections, ensuring long-term, high-performance broadband coverage. Hesse’s Digital Minister, Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, highlighted the importance of this expansion for equal living conditions and digital competitiveness across the region.
The state of Hesse initially planned to invest €90 million but later reduced its contribution to approximately €40 million after negotiations. The federal government is adding roughly €48 million, while Fulda District itself is contributing nearly €10 million. Bernd Woide, District Administrator of Fulda, expressed gratitude for the state’s financial backing, calling it essential for extending the network to thousands of additional homes. Telecommunications companies will use the Online Access Act (OZG) Broadband Portal to submit fully digital applications for laying new telecom lines. The state is working closely with municipalities and private partners to coordinate the expansion efficiently.
The project will create a future-proof broadband infrastructure for Fulda District. Over 35,000 households and 5,000 businesses will gain access to high-speed internet once the rollout is complete. The combined funding from state, federal, and local sources ensures the initiative moves forward without delay.
