Fulda District launches €98M fiber-optic expansion before Christmas

Fulda District has begun a major fiber-optic expansion just before Christmas. The project will bring high-speed internet to over 35,000 households and 5,000 businesses. Officials say it will create future-proof broadband infrastructure across Hesse.

The initiative focuses on fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections, ensuring long-term digital needs are met. Hesse’s Digital Minister, Prof. Dr. Kristina Sinemus, called the expansion vital for equal living conditions and the region’s digital competitiveness.

The state originally planned to invest €90 million but later reduced its share to around €40 million. The federal government is contributing roughly €48 million, while Fulda District is adding nearly €10 million. Bernd Woide, the district administrator, thanked the state for its financial backing and stressed the project’s importance for local development. Telecommunications companies can now use the Online Access Act (OZG) Broadband Portal for fully digital applications when laying new lines. Hesse is supporting the rollout through funding, coordination, and partnerships with municipalities and private firms.

The project will deliver high-performance broadband to thousands of homes and businesses. With combined funding from state, federal, and local sources, the expansion aims to boost digital access across Fulda District. The new infrastructure is expected to meet long-term connectivity demands.
