Freiburg's Knopfhäusle gets a green, affordable revival by 2026

Freiburg's historic Knopfhäusle settlement is undergoing a major transformation. On March 27, 2026, Stadtimmobilien Freiburg GmbH shared the latest updates on its renovation. The project balances heritage preservation, climate goals, and affordable housing while keeping rents below the city's average. The Knopfhäusle neighbourhood, located in eastern Freiburg, ranks among the city's most important historic areas. Renovation work began years ago, with the first upgraded homes reoccupied between 2022 and 2023.

The third phase, centred on the Meisterhäuser buildings, is now almost finished. Energy efficiency improvements have already slashed consumption by around 45 percent. In 2025, the initiative earned a national funding award for its approach. The fourth and final phase will continue until late 2026. Once complete, the project will provide about 100 modernised apartments at below-market rents.

The renovation will deliver upgraded housing while cutting energy use and preserving heritage. Residents will benefit from lower rents and improved living standards. The final stage is set to wrap up by the end of 2026.
