Fraport Unveils €500M CargoHub Master Plan for Frankfurt Airport

Fraport AG has unveiled its ambitious CargoHub Master Plan, aiming to future-proof Frankfurt Airport's cargo operations and solidify its position as Europe's leading cargo hub. The plan includes significant investments and expansions, with a focus on sustainability and digitalization.

The master plan, set to be completed by 2040, involves a €500 million spend. Key aspects include transforming LogisticsHub West into a trimodal hub linking road, rail, and air transport by around 2030. This will be achieved by developing CargoHub West on the site of the former Ticona facility, offering up to 150,000 square meters of warehouse space by 2028.

Fraport aims to collaborate with all stakeholders, including local residents, in developing the plan. The airport also plans to redesign and upgrade existing spaces in CargoCity South to create additional air freight and processing areas. This, along with other enhancements, will help Frankfurt Airport exceed three million tons of annual freight volume by 2040. Currently, the airport handles 1.93 million tons annually.

The master plan also focuses on enhancing digital processes, such as the Cargo Community System, for increased efficiency. This aligns with Lufthansa Cargo's praise for the new plans, emphasizing the need for greater digitization and automation in the industry. Other sustainable measures include incorporating solar lighting and hybrid/electric equipment, and implementing advanced systems like Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) to support 24/7 cargo operations.

The CargoHub Master Plan is a comprehensive roadmap for Frankfurt Airport's cargo operations. With a significant investment of €500 million by 2040, the plan aims to expand and upgrade facilities, enhance digital processes, and incorporate sustainable technologies. This will not only future-proof the airport's cargo operations but also support the projected growth in air cargo traffic worldwide.
