Frankfurt's tram line 17 extension to Langen advances with new route plan

Plans to extend Frankfurt's tram line 17 into Langen have moved a step closer. Preliminary studies suggest the project is viable, with a preferred route now identified. The city is preparing to fund further analysis before making a final decision on construction.

The proposed extension would stretch roughly 4.5 km along the Nordring, linking the Asklepios-Klinik to Langen Station. Key stops include Langen-Mitte, Nordring/Beuthstraße, and Nordring/Gewerbepark. This route, labelled L 5, has been the focus of planning since 2023, with construction potentially starting in 2027.

A feasibility study, costing around €90,000, is set to begin soon. The city has already allocated the necessary funds in its budget. Before work can proceed, however, the study must confirm whether the project meets a benefit-cost ratio of at least 1.0—a requirement for up to 90% federal funding. The next steps involve multiple council discussions. On September 6, the Committee for Environment, Construction, and Transport will review the proposal. Two weeks later, the Main Finance Committee will examine funding details. A final vote by the City Council Assembly is scheduled for September 28. Even if approved, each participating municipality retains the right to withdraw after the analysis phase. Results from the feasibility study are expected by mid-2024. These findings will determine whether the extension moves forward or is abandoned.

If the study confirms the project's financial and logistical viability, construction could begin in 2027. The extension would connect key areas of Langen to Frankfurt's tram network. The city's decision in late September will shape the next phase of planning.
