New Terminal at Frankfurt Airport Approved - Frankfurt's Third Passenger Terminal Set to Open Mid-April After Decade of Construction

After a decade of construction, the third passenger terminal at Frankfurt Airport has passed inspections and is set to open in mid-April 2026. The new terminal, operated by Fraport, will initially serve 19 million passengers annually.

Before welcoming passengers, the terminal needs further preparations. Retail spaces and food outlets must be expanded, and technical facilities like baggage handling systems need thorough testing. To ensure smooth operations, Fraport plans to conduct trial runs with thousands of volunteers between January and April next year. Around 8,000 people will simulate various passenger processes for a fee, helping to identify and address any issues before the official opening.

The project, with a projected cost of around four billion euros, is now entering its final phase. The exact opening date will be announced in the coming week, with schools resuming on April 13, following the Hessian Easter holidays.

The successful inspection of the third passenger terminal at Frankfurt Airport marks a significant milestone in its journey to serve passengers. With extensive trial operations and preparations underway, the terminal is on track to open in mid-April 2026, providing much-needed additional capacity to Germany's busiest airport.
