Frankfurt's Sophie-Opel-Schule to Get Barrier-Free Crossings, Enhanced Bus Services
The Sophie-Opel-Schule in Frankfurt is set for significant improvements. Pedestrian crossings on Ernst-Reuter Street will be made barrier-free and lit, and bus services, including those operated by LNVG, will be enhanced. The project requires a full street closure until mid-August.
The city is upgrading pedestrian crossings over Ernst-Reuter Street, east and west of the school. They will be made barrier-free and lit, ensuring safety and accessibility for all. Buses of the LNVG will not be detoured, maintaining service during school hours at the Sophie-Opel-Schule stop.
A barrier-free, unsecured crossing will be created over Reinhard-Strecker Street, further improving accessibility. In the future, buses will have their stopping positions at the same height on Ernst-Reuter Street, and sidewalks and waiting areas will be widened, benefiting passengers with mobility aids. The bus stop in the direction of the station will be moved to Ernst-Reuter Street, opposite the school, and the existing waiting hall on Friedrich-Ebert Street will be demolished and greened.
During the expansion, bus lines 41 and 42 will temporarily take new routes. After completion, passengers with rollators or strollers can board buses through the middle door on the same level, and wheelchair users can enter or be pushed in. The bus stop will also feature a green roof with drought-tolerant plants for climate adaptation. During the closure, bus lines 31 and 32 will be detoured, with temporary replacement stops on August-Bebel Street. People with visual impairments will be guided to the waiting and boarding area via tactile elements in the sidewalk.
The expansion of the bus stop on Ernst-Reuter Street requires a full closure of the street between Friedrich-Ebert and Reinhard-Strecker Streets until August 15. These improvements aim to enhance safety, accessibility, and comfort for all users of the Sophie-Opel-Schule and its surrounding area.
