Frankfurt's New Temporary Campus Eases School Expansion Pressures
Frankfurt is building a new temporary campus in Bockenheim to support the expansion of Kerschensteiner Primary School. The site will also provide interim space for other schools in the city during future renovations. The project forms part of a wider plan to manage growing student numbers and improve school infrastructure.
The city has purchased a property at 365 Ludwig-Landmann-Straße from the Catholic parish of St. Marien. As the land is designated for public use, Frankfurt secured it at favourable terms without competition from private developers. The existing building on the site will be demolished to make room for modular school facilities.
Kerschensteiner School will relocate to this temporary campus while its main site undergoes reconstruction and expansion. The Bockenheim location was chosen for its central position and proximity to sports facilities at Brentanobad, making it well-suited for educational use. Meanwhile, the neighbouring property at 367 Ludwig-Landmann-Straße, which houses a daycare centre, will remain untouched. Beyond serving Kerschensteiner, the new campus will act as a flexible relocation option for other Frankfurt schools in the future. This approach is part of the city's second phase of school construction, aimed at reducing the need for rushed, short-term building solutions. Officials plan to establish similar permanent temporary sites across different educational regions to streamline school upgrades and expansions.
The temporary campus will help Frankfurt manage school capacity while long-term projects are completed. By creating adaptable sites like this one, the city hopes to avoid disruptions caused by last-minute construction. The Bockenheim location is expected to play a key role in supporting multiple schools over the coming years.
