Frankfurt's Europagarden to Undergo Major Climate-Resilient Renovation

Frankfurt's Europagarden is set for a major overhaul, with renovation work expected to begin by the end of 2026 and continue until 2029. The city aims to adapt the garden to climate change and address soil issues, making it greener, more ecologically stable, and user-friendly.

The current Europagarden struggles with climate change adaptation and soil compaction. To address these issues, the city has commissioned Berlin landscape architecture firm relais to create the first drafts for the redevelopment, dubbed 'Europagarten 2.0'.

The renovation will involve replacing the soil up to two meters deep using a specialized mining machine. This will help restore soil functions and promote biodiversity. The number of trees will also increase from 280 to around 360, with new climate-resilient species like hop hornbeam, Hungarian oak, and silver lime being planted. The exact start date for the construction work is still unclear.

The redesigned Europagarden will feature more prairie plants, a wooden deck with a sun sail, park benches, and a miniature forest landscape for relaxation. The city of Frankfurt is committed to making the garden a greener, more resilient space for its residents to enjoy.
