Controversial Gap Filler: Construction of Riederwald Tunnel Begins - Frankfurt's €1.5B highway tunnel sparks debate over traffic and ecology

Frankfurt's largest urban highway management project

The tunnel will stretch 1.1 kilometres beneath Frankfurt's Riederwald district, bridging a 2.2-kilometre gap between the two motorways. Planners argue it will cut congestion for local residents, though critics warn it could attract even more vehicles into the area.

Legal battles over environmental concerns delayed progress for years. A major dispute centred on protecting the rare Heldbock beetle, whose habitat lies near the construction site. However, by February 2025, the final legal hurdles were cleared, allowing SBEV – Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH to proceed. The company will now work alongside city experts to advance the project. Supporters highlight the tunnel's potential to reduce gridlock, while opponents remain sceptical about its long-term impact on traffic and the environment. The debate continues as construction ramps up.

With legal challenges resolved, the tunnel is set for completion by 2033. The €1.5 billion investment will reshape Frankfurt's transport network, though its effects on congestion and the environment will be closely watched. The project marks a significant step in the city's infrastructure development.
