Frankfurt Expands Drug Consumption Room - Frankfurt’s bold move to combat crack addiction with safer drug spaces
Frankfurt is expanding its drug consumption facility in the Bahnhofsviertel district to address the growing drug crisis. The renovation of the existing site on Niddastraße will create a safer and more hygienic space for people struggling with crack addiction.
The city aims to improve cleanliness, oversight, and visibility in public areas to enhance both safety and quality of life in the neighbourhood.
The supervised drug consumption facility on Niddastraße, run by Integrative Drogenhilfe, is undergoing major changes. These updates respond to shifts in drug use patterns, particularly the rise in crack consumption. The goal is to provide a controlled environment where more users can access clean, supervised spaces.
City officials, including Social Affairs Commissioner Elke Voitl and Gabi Becker, director of Integrative Drogenhilfe, will outline the plans at a press briefing today at 11:30 AM. The project involves collaboration between local authorities, police, the Koordinierungsbüro Bahnhofsviertel, the city’s drug policy office, and outreach workers from OSSIP-Streetwork.
Efforts extend beyond the facility itself. The city is increasing street presence and monitoring to reduce public drug use and improve conditions in the Bahnhofsviertel. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to balance harm reduction with community safety.
The renovated facility will offer a more secure setting for vulnerable individuals. By adapting to current drug trends, the city hopes to reduce health risks and public disorder. The changes also form part of a wider push to restore order and cleanliness in one of Frankfurt’s most affected areas.
