Frankfurt and Region as 'World Design Capital' - Frankfurt Wins 2026 World Design Capital with Bold Creative Vision

Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region have been named World Design Capital for 2026, marking the first time a German city and its surrounding area will hold this prestigious title. The award recognizes their innovative use of art to improve daily life and democratic engagement. The World Design Organization (WDO) selected the region for its commitment to design-driven solutions. Over the year, around 2,000 projects and events will take place, organized alongside roughly 450 partners, focusing on five key areas: living spaces, education and science, design and economy, participation, and politics and design. The official launch is set for January 16 at Darmstadt’s Centralstation, with Hesse’s Minister-President Boris Rhein, who took office before the award was announced, attending the event. The total budget for the program is estimated at €16 million. Hessian Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori has highlighted the opportunity this presents for the state. The overarching theme for 2026, 'Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a Better Life', will guide the year’s activities. The title brings international attention to Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region, with €16 million allocated and 2,000 planned projects aiming to demonstrate how art can shape better living conditions. The launch in January will mark the beginning of a year focused on creativity, collaboration, and community impact.
