Frankfurt Residents Back 'House of Democracy' at Treasury Building

The public consultation for the 'House of Democracy' design competition in Frankfurt has concluded with over 2,000 residents sharing their views. The Treasury Building at Paulsplatz remains the favored location for the future civic space, with plans to transform it into an open, green, and inclusive hub.

Residents assessed the designs based on five key categories: urban integration, inclusivity, recognizability, Paulsplatz’s future role, and the northern area adjacent to the Treasury Building. Many respondents stressed the importance of a building that embodies democracy through its design and function, envisioning more green spaces, water features, barrier-free pathways, and seating for Paulsplatz.

The adjacent square is also set to become more accessible, eco-friendly, and vibrant, with enhanced opportunities for public interaction. The planned transformation aims to create an open, welcoming space for all, reflecting both architectural and ideological transparency. If the treasury department relocates, roughly 220 employees from the Finance and Investments Division and the Cash and Tax Office will need to be moved to other locations within the municipal administration.

A majority of participants favor adapting the existing Treasury Building rather than constructing a new facility, with eight of the ten winning designs proposing this approach. The design team that presented the preferred proposal is not specified in the available search results. The City of Frankfurt is now conducting a detailed analysis of the consultation results, with a full report expected in January 2026. Construction of the House of Democracy is expected to begin in 2028 or 2029, with projected building costs of approximately €75 million and around 6,200 square meters of floor space planned.
