Frankfurt Names Square After Reich-Ranicki - Frankfurt Honors Holocaust Survivors With a Square Named After Iconic Literary Couple

Frankfurt has honoured literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki and his wife Teofila by naming a square after them. The dedication took place in Dornbusch, the district where the couple lived for over 40 years. Their story includes survival during the Holocaust and a lasting impact on German culture. Marcel Reich-Ranicki and Teofila escaped the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. They survived the Holocaust in hiding before settling in Germany in 1958. For decades, they called Dornbusch their home, becoming well-known figures in the neighbourhood. The newly named square in Dornbusch now serves as a permanent tribute to Marcel Reich-Ranicki and Teofila. It recognises their survival, their decades in Frankfurt, and Reich-Ranicki’s lasting influence on German literary debate. The location reflects the couple’s deep ties to the community they once called home.
