Expansion plan for Frankfurt's rail network approved - Frankfurt approves €1B+ public transport expansion by 2035

Frankfurt's city council has given the green light to a major expansion of the city's public transport network. The decision paves the way for multi-million-euro investments under the Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan 2035+. Approval was widely expected after earlier backing from the city's executive board and transport committee.

The plan outlines 23 projects chosen from an initial list of 56 proposals. Among the key developments is an extension of the underground metro system beyond Südbahnhof station, reaching Sachsenhäuser Warte. Authorities will also assess whether part of this new route could run above ground instead.

Improvements are set for other parts of the city too. The Bergen-Enkheim district in the east and Eckenheim in the north will see better transport links. A new tram bridge across the Main River is also planned, alongside a wider expansion of the tram network.

The council's approval marks the final step in a process that began with reviews by the executive board and transport committee. No specific architect or planning firm has yet been named to oversee the project's implementation.

The Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan 2035+ now moves forward with full council support. The selected projects will undergo further development before construction begins. If completed, the upgrades would reshape Frankfurt's public transport system over the next decade.
