Frankfurt approves bold urban projects to reconnect neighborhoods and expand housing
Frankfurt’s city council has greenlit two major urban projects aimed at reshaping the city’s landscape. Plans for a 1.3-kilometre tunnel cover over the A661 motorway will reconnect divided neighbourhoods and add new green spaces. Alongside this, approval was granted for a new ‘District of Quarters’ in the northwest, set to provide homes for up to 17,000 residents and 5,000 jobs.
The A661 tunnel cover project will span 13 hectares, bridging the gap between Bornheim, Seckbach, and Preungesheim. Designed to cut noise and air pollution, it will also improve walking and cycling routes. The city of Frankfurt owns the project and oversees its integration into the urban fabric, ensuring traffic, noise protection, and environmental standards are met. Hessen Mobil, the state’s road authority, handles the technical planning and construction of the tunnel itself, while Planungsgesellschaft A661 Tunneldeckel mbH manages overall coordination, financing, and implementation.
The tunnel cover and new district mark Frankfurt’s push to reconnect communities and expand sustainable housing. Detailed planning and public engagement will shape the projects before construction begins. Both initiatives aim to reduce environmental impact while creating space for thousands of residents and jobs.
