Expansion plan for Frankfurt's rail network approved - Frankfurt Approves Ambitious Rail Expansion Plan for 2035 and Beyond
Frankfurt's city council has given the green light to a long-term plan for expanding rail-based public transport. The 'Comprehensive Rail Transport Plan 2035+' outlines major upgrades, including new tram lines and metro extensions. Developed by transport planner Oskar Dreesen, the scheme aims to reshape how residents travel across the city.
The approved plan focuses on 23 key projects, narrowed down from an initial list of 56 proposals. Among the priorities are a new tram bridge over the Main River and a broader expansion of the tram network. Another major proposal involves extending the underground metro beyond Sßdbahnhof station, possibly running part of the route above ground towards Sachsenhäuser Warte.
Public transport in the eastern district of Bergen-Enkheim and the northern area of Eckenheim will also see improved integration. The city will now assess multi-million-euro investments, including upgrades to the existing underground system. While the council's approval was widely expectedâfollowing earlier backing from the city's executive board and transport committeeâthe plan still requires detailed feasibility studies before implementation.
Dreesen, known for designing the S-Bahn ring (S9) and expanding the network in the 1960s, crafted the concept to serve as a foundation for future political decisions. The next steps will involve closer examination of costs, timelines, and technical requirements.
The plan sets out a clear roadmap for Frankfurt's public transport over the next decade. Feasibility studies will determine which projects move forward and how they will be funded. If realised, the upgrades could significantly change how people commute in and around the city.
