Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 3 opens April 22 with a 19-million-passenger capacity
Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 3 is set to open on April 22, marking a major milestone for European aviation. The new facility stands as one of the continent's largest privately funded infrastructure projects, designed to handle up to 19 million passengers each year initially.
The terminal's design focuses on flexibility and passenger comfort. A central main building connects to branching piers, housing lounges, play areas, and workstations. The check-in hall features 18-metre-high glass façades, creating a bright and open atmosphere.
Built with a modular layout, the terminal allows for future expansions without disrupting flights. Once fully developed, it will accommodate around 25 million passengers annually with the addition of a fourth pier, Pier K.
Connectivity was a key priority. The Sky Line train links Terminal 3 to other airport infrastructure, while public transport, bicycle parking, and an 8,500-space parking garage provide easy access. Trial operations are currently underway to ensure smooth functionality before the official opening.
After Terminal 3 becomes operational, airlines will gradually relocate from Terminal 2. This will enable a core renovation of the older facility, further modernising the airport's infrastructure.
The project aims to secure Frankfurt Airport's competitiveness for decades. By improving capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience, Terminal 3 reinforces the airport's role as a key European hub. The phased relocation of airlines will also allow Terminal 2 to undergo much-needed upgrades.
